"Lucky Star" is a song by American singer Madonna from her 1983 self-titled debut album. Written by Madonna and produced by Reggie Lucas, the track was originally meant for DJ Mark Kamins, a friend of the singer and resident DJ at New York’s Danceteria nightclub. Following the success of her debut single "Everybody" in 1982, Sire Records approved a full album. Creative tensions between Madonna and Lucas over the production style led to his exit, after which she brought in her then-boyfriend John "Jellybean" Benitez to remix and finalize several tracks, including "Lucky Star."
The song is a mid-tempo dance track with disco influences, featuring lyrics that use star imagery as a metaphor for romantic attraction. Its simple, catchy refrain recalls the nursery rhyme "Star Light, Star Bright." Initially released as a double A-side with "Holiday" in August 1983, it was later issued as a solo single: in Europe on September 9, 1983, and in the U.S. on August 8, 1984. It became Madonna’s first top-five hit on the Billboard Hot 100.
The Arthur Pierson-directed video helped define her early visual style. Featuring Madonna dancing in a white studio with her brother Christopher and friend Erika Belle, it became iconic for her layered jewelry, lace gloves, and confident self-presentation.
