"Like a Virgin" is a song recorded by American singer Madonna for her second album of the same name. Written by Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg, it was released as the album's lead single on October 31, 1984. The dance track features two catchy hooks, Madonna’s high-pitched vocals, and a synth-driven bassline. Its lyrics are ambiguous and open to multiple interpretations, containing hidden innuendos.
The song quickly became a breakthrough hit for Madonna, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as topping charts in Australia and Canada. It has sold over six million copies worldwide. Critics praised Madonna’s vocal delivery, and the accompanying music video—directed by Mary Lambert—showcases her sailing Venice’s canals in a gondola and wandering through a castle in a white wedding dress. The video received acclaim for its vibrant Venetian imagery and subtle religious references.
"Like a Virgin" has become one of Madonna’s signature songs and a pop culture milestone, notably for her performance at the first MTV Video Music Awards, which is widely regarded as iconic. The song has been covered and parodied by artists like Elton John and "Weird Al" Yankovic, and referenced in films and TV shows including Reservoir Dogs, Moulin Rouge!, and Glee. It is credited with empowering women and female performers of the era to embrace their sexuality.
The song’s origins trace back to Billy Steinberg, who wrote the lyrics inspired by the emotional healing he felt entering a new relationship after a difficult breakup. He and Tom Kelly originally envisioned it as a sensitive ballad, unsure how to use the word "virgin." Steinberg explained that the lyrics express feeling renewed and emotionally reborn, not literally about virginity. After recording a demo with Kelly singing lead, the song was presented to Warner Bros. A&R executive Michael Ostin, who immediately saw its potential for Madonna.
Madonna recalled liking the demos for "Like a Virgin" and "Material Girl" for their irony and provocative wordplay, despite not relating literally to the themes. She never expected either to become her defining hits.
In mid-1984, Madonna began recording her album with producer Nile Rodgers at New York’s Power Station studio. Rodgers initially doubted the song’s hook, finding the phrase "like a virgin" unusual and not catchy. However, after hearing the demo repeatedly, he changed his mind and agreed to produce the track. Rodgers assembled a tight rhythm section with himself on guitar, Bernard Edwards on bass, and Tony Thompson on drums.
Madonna was eager to release the song, viewing it as a fresh start after her first album had a modest performance. Steinberg noted Madonna’s close attention to their demo, even replicating some ad-libs from it in her recording, a rare sign of respect for the original material.
